Woman sues hospital for botched abortion

Woman sues hospital for botched abortion

A A 26-year-old woman in Jihlava is suing the city hospital for delivering her a healthy child eight years ago, Mladá fronta Dnes reports. “Kateřina,” who found herself pregnant at the age of 18, got an abortion at the Jihlava hospital. However, the doctor, unaware that she was pregnant with twins, accidentally left one child in her womb. She sued the hospital immediately after the child was born.

B Her lawyer, Alena Ostřejšová, said the 300,000 Kč ($18,100) sum Kateřina is asking for is to make up for lost income when she left her job to go on maternity leave following the unwanted birth. After eight years, the court is ready to pass a verdict. “This is an unprecedented case in the Czech Republic. The judge tried to find a similar case in the European courts, but failed,” Ostřejšová said.

C Such things can happen, according to Aleš Roztočil, director of the gynaecological-maternity section of the Jihlava hospital. “It is one of the complications of terminations of pregnancy,” he said. According to the head of the Prague maternity hospital in Podolí, Jaroslav Feyereisl, it is a complication that can happen to inexperienced doctors.

D This is why Kateřina decided to sue the hospital, her lawyer said. “We found out that there have been more such cases. They occur when the doctors don’t do their jobs – I don’t want to say badly, because technically everything was alright – but too routinely and they don’t bother to check their work. We want hospitals to scratch their heads and be more careful. The way they do their jobs affects people’s lives,” Ostřejšová said.

E According to experts, gynaecologists who perform abortions on women with twins can double-check their work with an ultrasound test – which the doctor did not do. At this point, Kateřina’s daughter still doesn’t know that she wasn’t wanted, the lawyer said. “Kateřina has a second child; she’s married. She’s a completely normal mother. She loves her daughter, and you can’t relate that to her demand for money,” Ostřejšová said, adding that the lawsuit is intended as a warning to the hospital. However, psychologist Vacláva Masaková says the child could suffer a terrible shock if she found out about the lawsuit. “It could damage the relationship with her mother and destroy trust. The child could become an introvert,” she said.

Club Hanoi

Club Hanoi

A Club Hanoi is non-governmental non-profit organization uniting those who are interested in Vietnam – its culture, history and traditions – or in the life of Vietnamese community in the Czech Republic.

B Club Hanoi was founded as an informal organization by a group of former students of the Vietnamese studies at the Charles University in Prague. The organization was formally registered with the Czech Ministry of Interior on January 16th 2004. Since then the organization has been comprised of students and professionals in the field Vietnamese studies, as well as members of Vietnamese community or individuals interested in Vietnamese community in the Czech Republic or Europe joined the organization.
C Its mission is to promote Vietnamese culture and integration of Vietnamese community in the Czech Republic while emphasizing the preservation of cultural identity.

D The interaction between the Vietnamese minority and Czech majority is often complicated by the many differences between the Czech and Vietnamese cultures. The aim is therefore to take these differences and highlight their positive aspects and value for the society in the Czech Republic. In doing so, they want to affect the perception of the role and place of Vietnamese community in the Czech Republic. This community is often described as self-sufficient, hardworking and inconspicuous. However, its full cultural potential has yet to be recognized – Vietnamese traditions, literature, complex history or natural heritage remains to the majority of the Czech society unknown.

E Besides, raising awareness about Vietnam and Vietnamese culture, they also try to promote and support the principle of equal opportunities for Vietnamese living in the Czech Republic. The club seeks to increase participation of the Vietnamese community in the public life in the Czech Republic; it supports the independence of individuals in their own community and active participation on solving social issues of common interest.
F The members of the club believe that they can contribute in eliminating discrimination against Vietnamese community including the often mutual prejudices, communication and cultural barriers in the Czech Republic. This will be achieved by increasing access to information and by organizing common social and cultural Vietnamese-Czech events. Their goal is to positively affect change of attitudes and behaviour of particular groups in the Czech society – Vietnamese community, the general and professional public – in order to achieve a more open and stronger civil society.

Letter of application

Letter of application

I would like to apply for the post of Personnel Officer with Anglia Bank, as advertised in the Daily News on 10 October.

I have a BA in French from the University of London. I am following a part-time course in Personnel Management at the Oxford College of Management, and I hope to pass the Diploma in Personnel Management at the end of December.

When I left university, I worked for a year in a computer company near Cambridge. Then I moved back to London to work as a French teacher in a large school, where I stayed for two years. During this time, I did some part-time work as a language trainer with factory managers, which I very much enjoyed.

Three years ago, I joined Carter’s Bank, where for the past year I have worked as Assistant Personnel Officer, dealing mainly with complaints from members of staff.

Having worked in a similar organisation to yours, I feel I am fully prepared for the challenges of this job.

Yours faithfully

Angela Varley
